Fire News: Marek Fire in Little Tujunga Canyon off I-210
Well it appears the cooler weather we’ve been enjoying here in SoCal didn’t chase away the fire bugs this weekend. Inciweb is reporting that the Marek Fire started as a brush fire about 2 a.m. on Sunday (Oct 12, 2008) in the area of Little Tujunga Canyon, North of I-210 near the Sunland Area. No reason for the fire’s origin has been given yet.
Firefighters have been using water dumping choppers and planes, in addition the ground crews all day to control the 2000+ acre fire. Because of the Santa Ana conditions smoke has been flooding into the downtown and Malibu areas. At present they say the fire’s about 50% surrounded.
As of last night they have evacuated about 1200 homes as the fire moves through the scrub and tinder in the local area. The civil damage has been limited to two homes, a garage, sheds and three motor homes. The animals at the Wildlife Waystation which is near by, are reported to be save and ready to evacuate if necessary.
Welcome to fire season folks.
