Fire News: Now Six Fires on in Southern California

FYI: Red flag warnings are in full effect both in the City of LA and the County. All hillside parking in the hills of LA are subject to ticketing and towing, so if you’re in on of those areas and could be blocking a fire truck– MOVE IT.

It is fire season in SoCal: Over the past couple hours the area has expanded from two fires in Northern LA County to six fires in an area from Camp Pendleton in North San Diego County to the Northeast LA County off the I-215.  Here’s the news we know now…

The news is reporting on all channels that the Marek Fire (Sunland Area) in Little Tujunga Canyon has scorched about 3,200 acres. The fire is about 5 percent contained, but flared up this morning due to the Santa Ana Winds kicking up. 39 homes have been destroyed It also appears their may be a second death... more as this develops.

The water dropping choppers are still running at this point as darkness is coming in– they can be pulled at any time due to darkness.

The next fire doesn’t even have a name, but it is San Bernardino off the 215 at Baseline. More as this develops…

There is another fire in Orange County in the Newport Beach area. It was reported on the radio people seeing smoke around 3:30 on Monday afternoon. Firefighters estimate the fire burned 50 acres. The fire was initially estimated to be 100 acres. Firefighters have called off a mandatory evacuation for residents on Hilltop Drive near the San Joaquin Reservoir in Newport Beach. Meanwhile, firefighters say they have a brush fire under control near Bonita Canyon in Newport Beach..

A wildfire burning in Camp Pendleton has grown to 100 acres and is now threatening homes on the base and in nearby neighborhoods, the Marine spokesman says several  families were being evacuated today from a base housing area threatened by a fire that started around 3:30 p.m. These families have been evacuated to El Camino High School in Oceanside

Firefighters are also battling a second fire, on Camp Pendleton burning near a training area on the base but not near any homes.

The American Lung Association of California today cautioned people near the fire to stay inside. For those near the affected area, the organization made the following recommendations: 1. if a trip outdoors is necessary in high smoke areas, use a NIOSH N95 or P100 mask, properly fitted; 2. people using oxygen should not adjust their intake level without consulting a physician; and 3. when driving through a smoky area, keep windows and air vents closed, and only use air conditioning on the "recirculate" setting. Residents can reach the American Lung Association at (800) 568-4872. Registered nurses and respiratory therapists are available for free consultation.
