USA Rollersports Adult Events of the US Roller Figure Skating National Championships began today in Lincoln, NB’s Perishing Auditorium.

Sorry, Gloria Nord will not be performing one of her fabulous numbers with the "Skating Vanities." However it is hard for me to believe that the beaded and lovely dance costumes Gloria wore in her ‘Vanities numbers (left) has become a near copy for what I am seeing the female dancers wear at this year’s US National Championships. Skating fashion has for women has come full circle– minus the feathered headpiece. Gloria would be proud.

Today the majority of the day was the official practice day for all the Adult events and was not webcast. This opportunity is given to all competitors to give them an opportunity to test out their skates on the National Floor and practice for their events. From what I saw this evening in a few of the dance events the floor has had it’s problems, between being slick in spots from water leaks, to skaters hitting loose rhinestones on the floor– skaters have had a few unexspected falls. Luckily, no one has been seriously injured.

The opening evening events I saw including Classic Solo Dance, Novice Team Dance and Premiere Team Dance, the teams are polished and strong this year.  Just so you kids understand, this isn’t your Grandma’s skating competition. Most of the competitors are skaters who have competed when they were younger and return to the sport. Others started skating as an adult in order to remain active and healthy, and eventually gravitate to the sport of Artistic Roller Figure Skating for a variety of reasons including having fun.

Stay tuned to the webcast in the morning… things are going to get good!
