Skating News: Awards Presented at US Roller Figure Skating Nationals
Last night prior to the evening events beginning USA Rollersports hand out the 2008 Annual Roller Figure Skating Awards.
While at the moment I do not have the entire list of Awards at the moment, a couple special ones are worth noting:
- Hall of Fame Award Winner for 2008: Warren Danner of Highland Heights, KY.
For those of who have been around skating since we were just out of training pants and are creeping up into pre-retirement, Warren Danner has been there. Over nearly 40 years of coaching Warren has taught nearly everyone of the elite coaches and worked with most of the elite skaters of my generation including: David Tassinari, Pat Fogerty, Cheryl Truman, Jack Courtney, Gary Callahan, Sherry Street, Rob Shafer, Richard Horne, Jane Panky, Jim Stevens, Jane Puracchio, Mark Howard, Cindy Smith and others, the majority of whom ended up FIRS World Champions. Seven members of the 1965 USA World Artistic Team got their starts with Warren Danner. Danner was a coach of coaches.
On a personal level Warren in one of the nicest men in the sport. He has always been willing to "take a look" at a skater, give advice when asked and share his knowledge. Most skaters who have ever had the pleasure of working with Warren can’t say enough nice things about a truly nice man. It’s long overdue Jack gets this award!
Former About.com Forum Guide to Figure Skating, JoAnn Schneider Farris wrote about a surprise call to one of Warren’s students – Jack Courtney last night after Warren’s Award. I know that Burt, my former dance partner is in Colorado Springs-Denver at the moment as the ISI US National Ice Championships is underway and he spoke to Jack this morning about the call– and Jack’s still reeling about it!
- Wojnarowsky Memorial Scholarship – Jessica Feuerstein- Kissimmee, FL the 2008 World Class Junior Women’s Figure Champion. This will be Jessica’s second trip to World’s.
